WATERFRONT TORONTO REVITALIZATION
On behalf of Condo Owners, COA has reviewed the Waterfront Toronto revitalization plans, in particular their intention to construct 5 bridges with timber construction as part of their Waterfront design to create "a straight line along the watersedge for residents, visitors and tourists to enjoy".
We have discovered that while the straight line flow may become a convenient path, it will wipe out the beautiful waterfront view at the 5 footbridges. On September 8, 2009, COA President and Directors attended a private visual presentation on the Wayard Princess to determine the exact location of the Spadina Footbridge within a few feet and approx. height of the proposed footbridge. It is to be located just east of Spadina on Queen's Quay immediately beside 401 Queen's Quay a(Harbour Terrace Condominium) and wil be the smallest bridge and the first in plans.
We welcome a positive transformation of our waterfront where beneficial changes enhance the beauty and usage for all local and City of Toronto residents, local communities and our visitors from other countries while fostering economic growth. We have reviewed Waterfront Toronto plans and recognize that the present concept does not allow maximum benefits for our Condo owners, local and City residents. It is very important to ensure that funding is used effectively and falls within the guideline of Waterfront Toronto’s mission. The Spadina slip is the shortest of the five slips with the least amount of usage and is the furthest west point of the main stream of Waterfront activity. This construction would not “Foster economic growth and make a major impact to redefine how Toronto is perceived by the World”.
Waterfront Toronto has introduced the bridge design as a world-renowned design with state of the art construction however the material being used is timber. COA has deep concerns on the lifespan of timber considering our weather and the strong potential blockage of our waterfront view. (See artist Concept) COA Members at Harbour Terrace Condominium state these concerns to us:
COA has requested Waterfront Toronto to modify the New Blue Edge as follows:
